Channel Letter Signs in Chicago, IL

Front-Lit, Back-Lit & Halo-Lit Channel Letters for Commercial Properties

Channel letter signs are three-dimensional, individually fabricated letters mounted to the exterior of a building or attached to a raceway. Each letter is built from aluminum and acrylic, illuminated from inside with LED lighting. They are visible during the day and luminous at night, making them the most widely used form of exterior commercial signage for businesses that need permanent, recognizable identification.

Configurations

Types of Channel Letters We Fabricate

Pro-Care Sign fabricates all standard channel letter configurations.

Type How It Works
Front-Lit (Standard) LED light shines through a translucent acrylic face. The most common choice for retail storefronts and restaurants.
Back-Lit (Halo-Lit / Reverse) Solid metal face with a clear back. Light projects against the building wall, creating a halo glow around each letter.
Exposed Neon Open channel with visible neon tubing and no plastic face. Used when a vintage or artisan aesthetic is the goal.
Non-Illuminated Dimensional letters without a light source. Common for interior lobby applications or buildings with restrictions on illuminated exterior signage.

Each type is custom-fabricated in the font, letter height, stroke width, color, and face material required to match your brand standards.

Installation methods

Raceway Mount vs. Direct Mount

Channel letters are installed one of two ways. The correct method is determined by your building type, landlord sign criteria, and local ordinance.

Direct Mount (Flush Mount)

Each letter is individually anchored to the building facade. Wiring is concealed in the wall. Preferred when appearance is the priority and the building facade allows wall penetrations.

Clean facade look

Raceway Mount

Letters are attached to a pre-fabricated metal housing that runs the full length of the sign. The raceway is then mounted to the building. Required when landlord or building management prohibits wall penetrations, or when the facade material cannot support individual letter anchors.

Landlord / facade limits

Pro-Care Sign determines the installation method during the site survey and permitting stage. Many Chicago commercial buildings and strip malls have sign criteria on file that specify which method is permitted.

Who we work with

Who Uses Channel Letter Signs

Channel letters are appropriate across a wide range of commercial property types:

Brands We Have Served

Pro-Care Sign has fabricated and installed channel letter signs for national retail and service brands operating in the Chicago area, including Chase Bank, Target, Panera Bread, CVS Pharmacy, Citibank, Papa Johns, Smoothie King, and Buona Beef. The same fabrication standards and permitting process that serve national accounts apply to every project we take on.

From survey to switch-on

How the Process Works

  1. Site Survey

We visit the location to assess the building facade, measure available space, confirm the installation method, and document any property management sign criteria.

  2. Design Rendering

A scaled rendering shows the sign on your building before anything is fabricated. Submitted for your review and landlord approval where required.

  3. Permitting

Pro-Care Sign handles permit applications with the City of Chicago and applicable municipalities. Channel letter installations require an electrical permit. As licensed electrical contractors in Illinois, we manage this process.

  4. Fabrication

Letters are fabricated in-house from aluminum and acrylic. LED modules are installed and tested before shipment.

  5. Installation

Our licensed technicians install and wire the completed sign. All electrical connections are made to code.

Lead time for a channel letter project typically runs four to eight weeks, depending on letter quantity and the permitting requirements of the specific municipality.

Every channel letter project we take on is permitted, fabricated, and installed by a licensed Illinois electrical contractor. Send us your storefront details and we'll scope the sign, the mount, and the permits in a single quote.

Alternatives to Channel Letters

If channel letters are not the right fit for a particular building, budget, or sign criteria, these are the most common alternatives:

Sign Type How It Compares
Cabinet Signs (Box Signs) A single illuminated box housing with a translucent face. More affordable than channel letters but less dimensional. Common in older strip malls where sign criteria require a cabinet format.
Dimensional Letters (Non-Illuminated) 3D letters without internal lighting. Suitable for interior lobby applications or buildings where illuminated exterior signage is restricted.
Pylon Signs Tall freestanding signs visible from the road. Used alongside channel letters on the building facade, not as a replacement for them.
Electronic Message Centers Programmable LED displays. Message can change. Higher cost than channel letters. Used as a secondary sign alongside a permanent identity sign.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Channel letters are fabricated from aluminum returns (the sides and back of each letter) and acrylic faces (the front panel). The aluminum is powder-coated for color and corrosion resistance. LED modules are mounted inside the aluminum housing.

Yes. Aluminum construction and weather-sealed LED modules are standard for exterior channel letter installations. The electrical components are rated for outdoor use across a wide temperature range. Pro-Care Sign installs to all applicable Chicago building and electrical code requirements.

In most cases, yes. Channel letter signs require a sign permit and, because they are electrically illuminated, an electrical permit from the City of Chicago. Requirements vary by municipality and zoning district. Pro-Care Sign manages the full permitting process as a licensed Illinois electrical contractor.

Front-lit letters have a translucent acrylic face. Light shines outward through the face, making the letter color visible at night. Halo-lit letters have a solid metal face and a clear back. Light projects onto the building wall behind each letter, creating a glow around the outside of the character rather than through it.

Yes. Installation method and sign dimensions are typically specified in the lease or by the building's property management. Pro-Care Sign reviews applicable sign criteria before starting any project and installs to both the property owner's requirements and local ordinance.
