Electronic Message Centers in Chicago, IL

LED Programmable Signs That Drive Foot Traffic & Customer Engagement

An electronic message center, often shortened to EMC, is an LED sign capable of displaying text, graphics, or animation that can be changed electronically, either remotely or through scheduled software. Unlike a static sign, an EMC lets a business update its message, promote current offers, or display time-sensitive information without replacing any physical sign material.

EMCs are commonly used to display business names, current promotions, time and temperature, and event information. Because the display can be changed at any time, the same sign structure can carry a different message every day without additional fabrication cost.

The technology

How Electronic Message Centers Work

An EMC is built around an LED matrix housed in a weatherproof cabinet. Content is created and scheduled using sign management software, then pushed to the display remotely, either from a desktop computer or a mobile device. Depending on the model, an EMC can display single-color or full-color content, including static text, scrolling messages, graphics, and in some cases animation or video.

Pro-Care Sign installs all types of EMC models, sourced from different manufacturers depending on the project. Because content management software varies by manufacturer, the specific platform used to update a display depends on the EMC brand installed for that project.

Who Uses Electronic Message Centers

EMCs are used across a wide range of industries where real-time communication with customers matters:

Code & compliance

Permitting and Regulations in Chicago

Electronic message centers are subject to additional sign code requirements beyond a standard static sign, because of their brightness and ability to display changing content. A sign permit from the City of Chicago Department of Buildings is generally required, and zoning regulations may restrict where an EMC can be installed, how bright it can be, and how frequently the displayed message can change.

Many municipalities require automatic dimming systems that adjust brightness based on ambient light conditions, along with limits on animation and message duration to reduce driver distraction near roadways. Pro-Care Sign manages the permitting and code compliance process as part of every EMC installation, as a licensed Illinois electrical contractor.

Brands We Have Served

Pro-Care Sign has designed and installed electronic message centers for businesses across the Chicago area, including Alamo Insurance, Chicago Pawners, and Citgo. The same fabrication standards and permitting process that serve national accounts apply to every project we take on.

From survey to switch-on

How the Process Works

  1. Site Survey

Pro-Care Sign assesses the installation location, sightlines from the road, and any zoning restrictions specific to the property.

  2. Design & Sizing

The right EMC size and configuration is determined based on viewing distance, budget, and the business's communication needs.

  3. Permitting

Pro-Care Sign handles the sign and electrical permit application process with the City of Chicago or applicable municipality.

  4. Installation

The EMC is installed and wired by Pro-Care Sign's licensed electrical technicians, including any required foundation or structural work for freestanding units.

  5. Software Setup & Training

Pro-Care Sign sets up the content management software and provides training so the client can update messages independently going forward.

From approved design to completed installation, an EMC project typically takes six to seven weeks.

Pro-Care Sign also offers repair, retrofitting, and upgrade service for existing EMCs, including units that were not originally installed by Pro-Care Sign.

Other options

Alternatives to Electronic Message Centers

Sign Type How It Compares
Cabinet Signs Static illuminated signage. Lower upfront cost than an EMC, but the message cannot be changed without replacing the sign face.
Channel Letters Best suited to permanent business name identification rather than a changing promotional message. Often used alongside an EMC as the primary identity sign.
Banners A lower-cost, temporary way to display a changing promotional message, without the ongoing software and hardware investment of an EMC.

Pro-Care handles the full EMC process, from permitting and installation through software setup and training, as a licensed Illinois electrical contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

It differs from a static sign in that the displayed content can be updated at any time without physically altering the sign structure.

Yes. A sign permit from the City of Chicago Department of Buildings is generally required, and because EMCs are electrically powered and programmable, additional zoning review may apply to brightness, placement, and message duration. Pro-Care Sign manages this process as a licensed Illinois electrical contractor.

Content on an EMC can typically be updated at any time using the sign's management software, either from a desktop computer or a mobile device. There is no limit on how frequently the message can be changed, though local sign ordinances may regulate how often the displayed content itself can rotate.
